Opening an online shop: decisions to make before adding products.

Catalogue, stock, delivery and order management: an online shop starts with practical decisions.

The Studio Arzani character prepares an online shop with boxes, product cards and a clear route to the cart.

Opening an online shop seems to start with photographs and prices. In practice, before uploading the catalogue, it helps to answer one question: how will each order be handled, from purchase to delivery? Thoughtful design helps present the products, but the project also needs to bring together stock, organisation and customer support. That is the journey I start with when planning a new online shop.

A catalogue customers can understand

You do not need to publish everything immediately. Starting with a selection of well-described products, clear categories and consistent photographs can be more useful. Measurements, materials, variants and instructions should answer the questions you already receive in your shop or over the phone.

If you sell several versions of the same item, we decide how to present them and manage their stock. Links between categories and products also need planning: they help visitors navigate and allow search engines to explore the catalogue.

Your stock records and website need to agree

If you also sell in person or use business management software, we need to establish which system keeps the information up to date. Who changes quantities? What happens when an item runs out? How do we handle an online order placed at the same time as an in-store sale?

Integration must be assessed against the actual capabilities of the software you use. Before promising full synchronisation, I check access, available data, update frequency and error handling.

Let us test an order before going live

Delivery costs, collection, payment methods and confirmation messages are all part of the same experience. Customers should understand what they are buying and what happens next. The terms of sale need to be carefully defined and checked for your business.

Before launch, we test purchases on phones and computers, including less convenient situations: an unfinished payment, an out-of-stock product, an incomplete address and a support request. A test order can reveal problems that a quick look at the homepage will not show.

Let us discuss the practical details

Would you like to launch an online shop or reorganise your current one? Tell me what you sell and how you handle orders today: together we can create a sustainable process, including for the people who will use it every day.
